From Instagram to Cannes: The New Generation of Filmmakers Is Here
Absolutely love seeing this.
One of the most exciting stories coming out of Cannes Film Festival this year has been Club Kid, the directorial debut from internet creator and comedian Jordan Firstman.
The film reportedly sparked a heated bidding war between studios including Netflix, Searchlight, Mubi and Focus Features before ultimately being picked up by A24 for a reported $17 million global deal.
What’s really interesting is that this now feels like an upward trend rather than a one-off success story. We’re seeing more and more creators from YouTube, Instagram and online platforms evolving into long-form filmmaking, and it genuinely seems to be working.
A lot of these creators already understand audience connection, pacing, visual storytelling and community building because they’ve spent years speaking directly to audiences instead of creating within traditional systems.
Even Markiplier’s Iron Lung is a great example of this shift. A YouTuber writing, directing, starring in, self-financing and distributing a horror film that went on to perform strongly theatrically and connect with cinema audiences in a real way.
Cinema has always evolved alongside technology. From television to digital cameras to streaming platforms, every major shift initially faced scepticism before eventually becoming normal.
Creator-led filmmaking may simply be the next evolution of that story.
And honestly, that’s a really exciting thing for the future of cinema.
